STUDENT FOCUS

Meet the new Student President Anne-Claire

My name is Anne-Claire and I graduated in July, so these are my first steps into the alumni world. As such, hello everyone. I haven’t completely left the student sphere behind me though, as I am also the Student President for 2012/13. That’s the capacity in which I am writing this to you now, just to let you know what the plans for the year are.

The main project of the Students’ Association this year is centred on access, whether it be access to university or access to our sports and societies. I realise this is quite broad, so let me give you a few examples. We think that the University is enriched by having people from as diverse backgrounds as possible, including some of the most disadvantaged ones. We want to work with the University to make sure that the broadest possible spectrum of society has the opportunity to go into Higher Education. But we also have ideas around disability in sport for instance. There are a lot of things that come under this banner, but hopefully we can make a good start on access this year.

Aberdeen is aiming to be a global university. This also means that we have to provide a great experience for our international students. So we’ll be working to make sure that we remember them in everything we do, from reducing the amount of alcohol at our events to having international event days. We would love to have a university where people from all over the world can socialise and feel accepted, as clichéd as that sounds.

We also need to garnish the Student Association’s trustee board, so if any of you are looking for an extra job...

We have many more things planned, and an exciting year ahead, which we would be happy to tell you about if you wanted to ask. I do have an admission to make though: all the earnest and serious plans are actually a front for our main project of the year, stealing Edinburgh Union’s moose. It would look so much better on our wall...
