UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN ALUMNUS ASSOCIATION

Jenny Shirreffs, a long-serving and hard-working supporter of the University and the Alumnus Association, was invested with the MBE at the beginning of 2010 for her voluntary service to the community of Aberdeen.

The Association’s 2009 annual Christmas celebration was held at King’s College Chapel on 11 December. As always, it was a popular and well-attended event. To mark the 21st and final year under the directorship of Dr Roger Williams, who will retire during 2010, the performances covered a selection of the many kinds of music which have provided such pleasure to so many over the years. The event was attended by 111 members and guests, whose donations at the conclusion of the performance raised a total of some £300 to help the choir meet its expenses in purchasing new music.

On 29 January 2010, the Association shall attend a performance of “The Surrogate” at the Arts Centre, preceded by an optional supper at La Lombarda. The play has been written by Charles Barron and will be directed by Roddy Begg. For more information about this and other planned events, contact Association Secretary Alan Towns at Aberdeen 589812 or at abalas@btinternet.com. For information about membership of the Association, click here. Non-members who wish to consider membership without making a commitment are welcome to attend up to two events on a trial basis.

UPDATE FROM THE STUDENT PRESIDENT, ROBIN PARKER

Happy New Year!

It’s revision time here once again in Old Aberdeen, and with all the snow now melted and the city back to its usual mild state, the way to the library is fortunately rather easier than a week ago!

The next year promises to be an exciting and challenging one for students here in Aberdeen. The highlight for the Students’ Association will be moving in to our own building, the former Butchart recreation centre. The University will be launching its brand new Curriculum in September, something that the University did a lot of work consulting and involving students with, and so should produce an even better student experience. Anecdotal evidence also suggests that this has been a more difficult year for graduates looking for a job, and only time will tell if that will be the case for students graduating this summer. It may also be a difficult year for the University sector, with Peter Mandelson announcing swingeing cuts to the Higher Education Budget just days before Christmas, a certain case of burying bad news.

I look forward to continuing to share those highs & lows with you,

Robin

ABERDEEN GEOLOGICAL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

Aberdeen Geological Alumni (AGA) has set up a network on the LinkedIn internet site. All graduates, students, staff (present and previous) of the University’s Department of Geology and Petroleum Geology are encouraged to join: click here to join the group, and please encourage classmates and fellow alumni to become members. This move is part of a drive by AGA to improve communications with the University of Aberdeen’s geological community.

The AGA was formed in 1998 and is one of the most active departmental alumni associations in the University. It aims to provide a focus for peer-group support and to help preserve and promote the tradition of geoscience excellence at the University.

AGA raises funds through social events and sponsorship to provide undergraduate prizes and assist with fieldwork expenses. The main fundraising event is a Quiz Evening in which teams compete for our main sponsor's trophy - the HRH Challenge Quaich. The next AGA Quiz Evening will be held on 17 March 2010.

CAFE SCIENTIFIQUE

Café Scientifique’s discussion forum just got bigger! In 2010 we will be running three Café Sci style series: the first, launching in January, continues the highly successful city centre events in Waterstone's Book shop on Union Bridge. The second, also launching in January, is a new medically themed Café in the new Suttie Centre at the Foresterhill Health campus. Thirdly, come February, a new Café will launch at Buchanans restaurant, Woodend Barn near Banchory.
