UPDATE FROM THE STUDENT PRESIDENT, ROBIN PARKER Seasonal greetings to you all from the Students' Association. Students are busy finishing off and handing in their final pieces of coursework and assessment for the term and looking forward to the Christmas break and preparing for the January exam diet. We've been busy here at the Students' Association too, and are looking to make a final push through to the end of term. It won’t all be fun and games for all students though. At the moment we are running a campaign together with NUS Scotland called ‘Still in the Red’ which highlights how many students fall into significant levels of debt whilst they are studying. Many, especially postgraduate and international students, are also working long hours in order to fund their way through their studies. Even if an undergraduate student can jump through all the means-testing hoops, they will still only receive approximately £5,000 in governmental support for the year. That is why we are asking people to join with us and ask the question, why are students in Scotland Still in the Red? I was very privileged to meet the new Principal, Professor Ian Diamond, earlier in the week, and was very impressed by both his ambition and his ideas for developing the University and the student experience here. It’s been a privilege to work with Sir Duncan Rice and the future promises to be an equally exciting prospect for all of us at the University of Aberdeen. One of our most successful events over the past few weeks was our ‘Copenhagen Awareness Week’, which has been raising awareness amongst students of the ongoing climate change negotiations in Denmark. We have also passed a motion at Council calling for a legally binding deal to be reached in Copenhagen, and I passed this on in a letter to Gordon Brown and Ed Miliband. Fingers crossed here for a deal which will secure us a sustainable future! On that high note, I wish you a Happy Christmas and a Merry New Year! Robin PS If you would like to receive an e-Christmas Card from AUSA, please email us at ausa@abdn.ac.uk and we’ll pop one in the e-post!
