UPDATE FROM THE STUDENT PRESIDENT, ROBIN PARKER Hi there, President of the Students' Association again! The Campuses are once again buzzing with life as the next legion of students arrived the week before last. Every hour the High Street fills with people shuffling between lectures and the queues for coffee in the Hub are getting longer and longer. But, it certainly all seems to me to be alive with anticipation and excitement about the year to come. Freshers' Week Freshers' Week 09 was a big success and several people have given me very positive feedback on the week as a whole. Once again we had the marquees set up on the Kings pitches for the Societies and Sports Fayres. They were bigger than ever, as we had the largest ever intake of new students this year, and lots of groups reported increases in interest in their activities. Diversity Night Wednesday night of Freshers' week saw new students try out their rhythm on African drums, swing their hips during a salsa class and try their hand at Indian traditional dance. In response to requests from students, AUSA organised a number of events that weren't alcohol related and were based on campus in the evening. Diversity Night came about as AUSA felt it was important to have an event that reflected the mix of cultures, backgrounds and individual interests that make up Aberdeen's cosmopolitan campus. The night was a great success with around 70 students in attendance who tucked into foods from around the world listened to a short presentation by Rector Steve Robertson, before taking up the different classes that were on offer. University Fayre This was also a new event put on in response to student input, so that there was a chance to explore the other courses on offer at the University and to come and ask a few questions before academic advising appointments came around. This was also a great success with good attendance from both students and staff members. Many students said they found it useful to have the chance to ask people from their department questions and talk to lecturers from their courses. Gaudie This year is going to be an exciting year for Gaudie as it goes in to its 75th year of existence. Plans are being put in place for a celebratory ceilidh, on the 6th of November, if you are interested please let me know, via sapresident@abdn.ac.uk, it would be great to get some former Gaudie editors and journalists involved if there are any out there.
