UPDATE FROM THE NEW STUDENT PRESIDENT, ROBIN PARKER

Dear Alumni,

It is a great honour to be taking over the responsibility of representing the students of the University of Aberdeen as President of the Students' Association. Duncan and his predecessors have achieved a lot over the years and there is a lot to live up to. Around the University and the community there is a lot of ambition and expectation for the future, making it an exciting time to be taking up my new role. As times change, the student demographic changes as well; becoming more diverse and more international with more postgraduate students, more students with part-time jobs and more focus being placed on environmental issues. Each of these factors will bring its own challenges for the Student Association and we will have to rise to them. It is my hope that AUSA can be a leader in dealing with these issues, learning from other Unions’ experiences and being innovative in our own right.

We’ll also be moving into our own building, the former Butchart Recreation Centre, and we’re looking forward to turning that into the new centre of student life and activity and giving it a physical sense of belonging to students.

It also gives me great pleasure to congratulate all those who have just graduated, it’s been great studying with you and I wish you all the best for the future. You are now in the capable hands of the University’s Alumni Assocation, and I do hope you’ll keep in touch. One of my goals for the year is to broadcast as widely as possible all the great things that students here achieve, so I’ll be keeping you updated every month through this e-bulletin. I’ll also be developing our website and working to improve our online student media, and I hope you’ll take the time to have a look at both.

I’m really looking forward to a year of working with students to support their activities and achievements and any way you would like to contribute to the AUSA’s efforts in your role as an alumnus would be greatly appreciated by all of us.

Best wishes from Aberdeen,

Robin

ALUMNI ANNUAL FUND - CELEBRATING SUCCESS!

The Alumni Annual Fund has raised over £300,000 this year which is the highest total in our ten year history.  We would like to thank everyone who donated and helped make our Tenth Anniversary a record-breaking year!  With your help we have been able to support students by providing scholarships, study support grants and sports bursaries.  We have also supported pioneering medical research and the new library project.  The student community has also received funding for the campus newspaper – the Gaudie, student radio, the Societies Union and Niteline, the University’s confidential listening service.  These awards would not have been possible without the support of our donors and they have a huge impact on students’ experience at University.

Thank you again to everyone who has supported the University over the last ten years.
