UPDATE FROM THE STUDENT PRESIDENT, DUNCAN MACKAY

Hello Alumni, I hope you’re enjoying Spring as much as AUSA is at the moment!

It seems that every time I write for the e-bulletin I discuss how busy we are, and this month is no exception!

Following the return of students from their Easter break we were in the midst of Elections fever, with a successful three days worth of hard-campaigning which saw turn-out rise and a lot of passionate students who are keen to get involved in the running of AUSA.

This month also saw the climax of Charities fortnight whose highlights included Gala Saturday, the Student Show (this year it was tremendous ‘Dial M For Mastrick’) and the return of the Torcher Parade. The Torcher Parade is still Europe’s largest torchlit procession and involved a lot of hard work from volunteers and staff alike, especially after last year’s unfortunate events which led to its cancellation. We are hoping to raise more for charity than ever before and believe we are well on our way to surpassing the amount dispersed to charities that was handed out last year.

On a final note I had delighted to announce that within the next year AUSA will have new premises. After much lobbying and hard-work, AUSA has managed to secure the Butchart Recreation Centre as a new facility after the opening of AberdeenSportsVillage on Linksfield Road. Whilst Butchart won’t be a union in the traditional sense, we believe it will be a hugely successful students’ centre where societies and student activities can flourish.

Until next time, good health to you all,

Duncan

CNR SCHOLARSHIPS

CNR International (UK) Limited has announced the launch of eight new undergraduate scholarships in the College of Physical Sciences and the College of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Aberdeen.

The scholarships have been set up in memory of four former employees of CNR, who have passed away in recent years, and will provide support to the scholars selected for the duration of their degree courses.

The scholars participating in the scheme are studying in the areas that the four former employees of the company were engaged in, namely Petroleum Geology, Petroleum Engineering, Accounting & Finance and Engineering.

LIBRARY WEB CAM

The Library project has taken a major step forward as the demolition of the single story extension to The Queen Mother Library was completed earlier in the month. This now clears the site entirely for construction of the new Library which will begin in Summer 2009. We have set up a selection of web-cameras which will allow you to track progress of the construction and keep up-to-date as the building takes shape.

The cameras can be viewed at http://www.abdn.ac.uk/newlibrary/webcam/webcam.shtml and we eagerly anticipate the breaking of the ground for this project.
