In 2009, to celebrate the year of Homecoming, the programme will be enhanced with a number of additional extra events especially for our alumni to enjoy. In addition to the main festival programme, alumni will be able to enjoy a departmental ‘doors open’ day, walking tours of Old Aberdeen, a special alumni only event, a reunion ceilidh and much more. In addition, we will be delighted to offer you a number of great discounts at hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions throughout the city. UPDATE FROM THE STUDENT PRESIDENT, DUNCAN MACKAY Greetings to all alumni, and I hope this bulletin finds you well. The biggest news that we have to report from AUSA is the closure of the Student Union on Littlejohn Street. As disappointed as we are to see the Union go, we recognised that it had no place in a long-term strategy for either AUSA or the University. We are currently working with the University to deliver social space or a new Union on the King’s campus that will be more relevant and accommodating to the students we have and the students we hope will attend University here at Aberdeen in the future. Just recently, we saw the annual Kirking of the Students’ Association in the chapel at King’s. For the past four years, the Kirking ceremony has taken the form of an inter-faith service when the University community of all faiths (and even none) can come together and celebrate all that unites us – this year’s theme was the water of life and was enjoyed by everyone who braved a half foot of snow to attend. Before I depart I must take this opportunity to send my deepest thanks to you who contributed to the Alumni Annual Fund – we applied for several grants and were lucky enough to get them all! Gaudie, ASR, Bookends and Niteline are four of our services that benefited greatly from the money you donated. It will be my duty to keep you updated about how your money is being used to help student activities at the University. As ever, do not hesitate to get in touch with us – we enjoy hearing your comments, queries and questions! Please contact me at sapresident@abdn.ac.uk. All that remains for me now is to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. | Book of the month There is a 'lost city' lying to the north of the modern city of Aberdeen. It is Scotland's most compact and least known architectural treasure-house. In this fine Burgh is a pattern-book of Scottish architecture, both vernacular and classical, offering one of the most significant townscapes in all of Scotland. Read more... |
