UPDATE FROM THE STUDENT PRESIDENT, DUNCAN MACKAY I hope this e-bulletin finds you in good health. The main focus of our efforts here at AUSA in the past month has been the installation of Stephen Robertson as the new Rector of the University. The great and the good of academic and civil life turned out for the event, in which I installed Mr Robertson before he delivered a speech that was his statement of intent for his three year term in office. To read his rousing prose on our website, click here – I very much encourage you to do so. After the formalities, there followed the tradition that many of you may have seen in the media – of the new Rector being carried atop Angus, our charity mascot, along the High Street and into the Machar Bar to buy a round of drinks for his student supporters. A great day was had by all! Aside from the installation, business has been settling down here in the Hub with a multitude of meetings – including internal forums such as the Curriculum Reform Commission, and external meetings with bodies such as CHESS, NUS and SUS. We also had the first meeting of the year for the AUSA Council when we have deep discussions about a wide range of issues – there’s certainly no danger of apathy setting in here at Aberdeen! Feel free to contact me about anything, big or small, at sapresident@abdn.ac.uk. Until next month, take care!
Course to tackle issues raised by human rights and international law in challenging operational environments | Provisional dates have been set for an innovative course tackling the issues raised by human rights and international law and their affect on organisations operating in challenging environments. With applications for a wide spectrum of industry and organisations – not least the energy industry, NGOs, IGOs, the media, the armed forces, governments, and those with international corporate social responsibility roles and concerns. Teaching on this course will be delivered by a small and cohesive group of experienced and internationally recognised academics from the fields of law, politics and international relations, and the commercial sector. Operated by the University in conjunction with global risk mitigation and security specialist AKE, this is a certified course which can enhance applications for postgraduate study in Strategic Studies, International Security and Democracy, and Human Rights in the School of Social Sciences.
