UPDATE FROM THE STUDENT PRESIDENT, DUNCAN MACKAY

Greetings once again to our alumni,

Has it really been a month? It seems like only days ago that I last penned a message for this e-bulletin. The last month has been enjoyably hectic.

The end of September saw over 3000 students descend on Aberdeen for Freshers’ Week 2008/09. Work for this week began months ago and our volunteers and staff were raring to go on the Saturday morning with all students who needed a lift from the airport and railway station being picked up and taken to their halls of residence. Move-in weekend flew by, and so did the rest of the week with popular nights at the Union Bar and our late night partners. This year also saw the second year of the Freshers’ Film Festival at Vue Cinemas which was a great success alongside many of our ‘non-traditional’ Freshers’ events, reflecting the change in student demographics. There were still the mainstays of the week however, the Societies and Sports Fayres on the Tuesday and Wednesday respectively saw thousands flock to sign-up to student activities for the year. The music at the fayre was provided by Aberdeen Student Radio (ASR) and it would be remiss of me not to point you in their direction (http://www.abdn.ac.uk/asr) where they are doing some terrific work.

Our team is now settling back down to the nitty gritty of our work, but we of course welcome any distractions so feel free to regale us with tales of your time here and other reminiscences; if we get enough of these, it may become a regular feature on our new website, (www.ausa.org.uk). Do not hesitate to contact me with any comments, questions and queries at sapresident@abdn.ac.uk
