WELCOME TO THE JULY ALUMNI E-BULLETIN

Graduation ceremonies are now well under way at Marischal College, and earlier this week Sir David Attenborough – who also received an honorary degree from the University – spoke to friends and alumni as part of our series of Director’s Cut events.

In this month’s e-bulletin we give full details of this summer’s distinguished recipients of honorary degrees. We also have a final goodbye from this year’s Student President, Angela Fraser. We hope you have enjoyed reading her monthly updates over the past year.

We are delighted that the final BUSA (British Universities Sports Association) rankings show the University at 3rd place for the year in Scotland. With 71 points more than last year, the University rose one place to 27th in the national rankings, and edged ahead of St Andrews and Glasgow to claim third place in Scotland. Next year promises to be an exciting campaign with the University expanding its activities to create a further 14 teams.

ATTENBOROUGH AMONGST DISTINGUISHED RECIPIENTS OF HONOURY DEGREES

Millions have grown up inspired by his work and words, and Sir David Attenborough captivated his latest audience when he accepted an honorary degree at the University's summer graduation ceremonies.

The world-famous naturalist broadcaster is one of a number of leading figures to be honoured for their work in their respective fields including Alex McLeish, the former Scotland and Rangers FC manager, and Bridget McConnell, the Chief Executive of Culture and Sport at Glasgow City Council.

GOODBYE FROM ANGELA FRASER, STUDENT PRESIDENT

It is with great sadness that I write this, my last alumni e-bulletin. For those of you who are reading my update for the very first time after having graduated this July, congratulations on your fantastic achievement and welcome to the alumni community. We hope that you will enjoy the many benefits that come with being part of a diverse community that spans the globe. These benefits include special discounts exclusively for alumni, a University email address for life, and also invites to the many events that the wonderful alumni relations department organise around the world. So don’t forget to remind your fellow classmates to register online too.

Since my last report a number of my fellow sabbaticals and I have been working hard to keep pressure on the national government on a number of different issues affecting students. These include the raising of the off sales drinking age to 21 and the ending of accommodation assistance for medical graduates. We have also been continuing work with the University to secure an on-campus social space for future students at the University.

Also, on Thursday the 26th of June, Aberdeen Students’ Charities Campaign disbursed over £50,000 to local charities in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. These groups ranged from the  OAP groups and UCAN, to disabled sports groups. I would like to thank the many different ways in which alumni contributed to this total.

Finally, thanks again to everyone who has emailed or written to me over the last year with your stories, memories and ideas. They have been a real inspiration to myself and my fellow sabbaticals.

ALUMNI TRIP TO THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

As a first for Aberdeen, we are delighted to offer an exclusive alumni tour to this naturalist’s paradise 600 miles off Ecuador’s Pacific coast. The tour begins at the UNESCO world heritage city of Quito, high in the Andes, before spending a week on a privately chartered cruise on CORAL II around the Galapagos Islands. Specialist naturalists will help you get up close to astonishing birdlife, iguanas, penguins, sea lions and giant tortoises.

For those with a few extra days free to relax, an optional pre-tour of the Ecuadorian Amazon can also be booked. This offers a journey to another world of verdure, colourful bird life and ecological adventure. For more information on how to book this tour, click here.
