NEWS FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE STUDENTS' ASSOCIATION The new term started with Charities Fortnight, which I am sure many of you will remember from your time as Students. The fortnight started with the student show "Date Expectations" which has been described as "a hilariously funny, local based show". The Charities Fortnight always ends with Europe’s largest torch lit parade, when hundreds of students dress up and decorate lorries to ride around the city centre collecting money from the locals enjoying the parade. This year's event was cut short due to an unfortunate accident just before the parade was due to begin. Which led to the temporary closure of Union Street and the parade being halted at Queen's Cross. This was a huge disappointment to all those involved in the event as well as those people on Union Street and Carden Place who did not get to see the parade. The money from the parade is still being counted although it is anticipated that we will have raised less than half of our expected total. Anyone who did not have the opportunity to give on the night or who would simply like to donate to the Charities Campaign please email sapresident@abdn.ac.uk. | “Terrific” tickets sales for WORD 08 Hundreds of tickets have been snapped up ahead of WORD 08 –the University of Aberdeen’s Writers Festival. WORD O8 takes place on the weekend of May 9-11, when an expected 11,000 visitors will be treated to a packed weekend of readings, music, art exhibitions, and film screenings from around 50 authors, poets and artists. Folk-rocker King Creosote, Marvel writer Mark Millar, Dons legend Willie Miller and North-east crime writer Stuart MacBride are among a host of popular and literary names appearing at the three-day festival. Karen Weiniger, WORD Festival Manager, said: "We've been thrilled with the appetite shown for this year's WORD festival so far. Tickets have been flying out of the door for the likes of Hardeep and Alasdair Gray, but what's been really pleasing is the terrific interest shown in the whole programme".
