WISHING ABERDEEN ALUMNI IN THE USA A HAPPY THANKSGIVING | Aberdeen is supported in the USA by the University of Aberdeen Development Trust USA (UADT USA).
In 2007 a new President was elected and a series of alumni events took place in September. To help stay connected with your alma mater, the monthly e-bulletin has returned and this special edition is just for USA-based alumni.
We wish you well at this special time of year and look forward to staying in touch with you in 2008. |

MESSAGE FROM THE UADT USA PRESIDENT, JONATHAN DAUBE (MA 57) When I was a student at the University of Aberdeen there was one single student from the United States, and I still remember her name. In the late fifties an American student was somewhat exotic.
Today, there are almost three hundred Americans studying at the University; some for a year, some for longer. There are over three thousand alumni who live in the United States - some of them British, some Americans and a few with dual nationality. Today's University staff cross the Atlantic as if it were a trip to Dundee or Inverness. The American connection with the University is profound and deep. The Board of Directors for the UADT, all of whom have a love of and commitment to the University, have made it their business to help strengthen the University by contributing financially, by soliciting gifts from others, by encouraging connections between and among alumni, and by helping to recruit both undergraduates and postgraduate students. When I first came to the United States I had no idea what Thanksgiving was. Today, I’m sure there are enough Americans in Aberdeen to consume vast amounts of turkey. In the spirit of Turkey-Day, I am thankful for Aberdonian friends new and old, and I wish you a joyful holiday season. | SUPPORTING TODAY'S UNIVERSITY AND ITS STUDENTS, THE ALUMNI ANNUAL FUND Last year more than 100 members of the US alumni community donated to the Annual Fund. These gifts, combined with corporate gifts and grants from trusts and foundations, enable the UADT USA to make an annual grant to the University. In 2007 the Board supported student scholarships, the new library, Matthew Hay Centre and funded vital research at the University. The US Annual Fund is a direct mail and telephone fundraising campaign. Hopefully you will now be in receipt of the mail pack; if not please click here to read more. Very soon students from the University will call you to talk to you about Aberdeen and to ask you to support the US Annual Fund. Thank you to everyone who has made a gift to date. We hope that you will continue your support next year. For those who wish to donate online, please click here. |

ALUMNI EVENTS IN THE USA In September the University organised three alumni gatherings; a gallery tour and drinks in Washington DC and receptions in Philadelphia and Boston. University staff returned from the trip invigorated by the willingness of alumni to help the institution achieve its ambitions and it is hoped that more events for alumni will be organised in 2008.
The next US alumni event is not too far away. Those living around the San Francisco area are invited to attend an evening reception at the Women’s Faculty Club, University of California, Berkeley, on Wednesday 13 February 2008. The University’s Chancellor’s Assessor, Alistair Mair, will give an illustrated update on developments at Aberdeen and the evening will also enable you to meet old acquaintances and perhaps even make new ones!
The University will also be participating in the Ancient Universities Burns Supper in Cambridge, MA, on Friday 18 January 2008, along with alumni from Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Glasgow and St Andrews universities. The Burns Supper will be followed by a ceilidh and the evening promises to be great fun for all!
If you are interested in attending any of these events, please contact the UADT USA Administrator, Jim Day, on jcday0126@aol.com. Please also get in touch if you have suggestions for other events across the US – there are alumni living in every state – or if you would like to volunteer as an organiser.
