MESSAGE FROM THE STUDENTS' ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT, ANGELA FRASER

Thank you to everyone who emailed me following the September e-bulletin to offer their help, advice and words of wisdom on the Union Bar.  I would especially like to thank those of you who took the time to write to Gaudie - this was greatly appreciated.

The end of September saw the arrival of more than 3,000 new students for the new academic year. This was a very exciting time and, for everyone in the Students’ Association, a very tiring time too! A hectic week of events took place and included some fantastic new nights at the Union Bar, the legendary Freshers’ Fayres and a number of new evening events including the very successful Jazz and Coffee night. A great week was had by all and it seems that the start of classes was an unwelcome reminder of the real reason we all go to University!

Last month also saw the official launch of our new online radio station ASR that I mentioned in the last alumni e-bulletin. This is a great way for students to get involved and have their voice heard at the University. Alumni can also support the station by listening online at www.abdn.ac.uk/asr.

I look forward to staying in touch with you.  If you would like to contact me with any comments or advice I would be delighted to hear from you.  Email sapresident@abdn.ac.uk.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Each month we will highlight a book that has links to the University.  You will be able to discuss the book with other readers in our discussion forum through the secure Alumni Online Community.

This month we are featuring Peter Davidson's The Idea of North. The author explores the very concept of 'north' through its various manifestations.  It draws mainly on literature but also covers cinema, art and history more widely.  Read more ...

Help make the Crown Tower Scotland’s most treasured place

We have until the end of October to help ensure that a designated landmark of the University and the City of Aberdeen becomes officially one of the ten most treasured places in Scotland.

An original sketch by architect Sir Basil Spence of the CrownTower is competing in the online Treasured Places competition being run by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and HistoricalMonuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) to find Scotland’s best-loved views.

Cast your vote - and comment on any of the entries - by visiting the website www.treasuredplaces.org.uk
