Edinburgh Supreme Courts Visit

Alumni and guests enjoyed a wonderful evening at the Supreme Courts of Scotland in Edinburgh recently. Extremely informative and insightful tours were given by Lady Dorrian, Lord Woolman and Lord Bracadale, and the reception afterwards was held in the fantastic Advocates Library Reading Room.

Aberdeen Re:Union 2013

Did you ever eat a pie in the Dungeon or buy a ticket from Union Travel? Are you old enough to have listened to a record in the Hosie Room, or maybe young enough to have drunk at Sivells? On Saturday 17 August for one night only these Union favourites will be resurrected at the Beach Ball Room, with a line-up including Midge Ure - Ultravox, Toyah Willcox, Jack Day and Blues ‘n Trouble as well as a ceilidh and an 80's disco mixed by DJ Ayres. Exclusive Alumni event with Simon Watt - Statutory Meeting of the General Council

We hope you will join us to hear TV presenter and biologist Simon Watt talk exclusively to us about some of his fascinating experiences while filming Channel 4’s 'Inside Natures Giants'. The event will be on Thursday 9 May at 6pm in the King’s College Conference Centre on campus. This free event, which is part of the Statutory Meeting of the General Council will also include a report from the Convenor of the Business Committee and General Council notices. It will be followed by a drinks and canapé reception in the James MacKay Hall. As a graduate of the University you are automatically a member of the University’s General Council. Tickets still available for The May Festival - Dont miss out!

The May Festival, 10-12 May 2013, is set to be a spectacular weekend that is guaranteed to have something on offer for all the family. The event will encompass a variety of different themes, with a host of famous faces taking part. The programme is jam-packed with events ranging from a cooking challenge with renowned Scottish chef Nick Nairn, an enchanting performance from acclaimed singer, Julie Fowlis, to readings from Liz Lochhead, arguably Scotland’s best loved modern-day poet, and acclaimed playwright. There will also be a Disney Pixar Director’s Cut special with fellow alumnus Gordon Cameron. With credits including 'Up', 'Finding Nemo', 'The Incredibles' and 'Brave', you will hear all about what it’s like to work on some of the most successful animations of all time. Scholars' Reception

On Tuesday 23 April the University of Aberdeen Development Trust hosted the 11th annual Scholars' Reception to recognise the contribution of donors who fund scholarships for students studying a wide range of disciplines. Over 40 scholars attended, to meet and personally thank their donors. Professor Steve Logan introduced Professor Phil Hannaford, Sarah Keung who is studying an Msc in Environmental Science and Callum Pierce who is a fourth year medical student, all of whom spoke about the importance and life-changing impact of scholarships. Olympians champion Aquatics Centre

Thursday 4 April saw Aberdonian commonwealth gold medalist David Carry and his wife, Olympic silver medalist Keri-Anne Payne join the discussion panel at an inspiring event held in The Sir Duncan Rice Library, which focused on the many benefits that will be enjoyed at the new world-class, Olympic-standard Aquatics Centre in Aberdeen. Guests also heard from Aberdeen Sports Village Chief Executive David Beattie and fellow alumnus, Mark Speed who plays waterpolo for Scotland. The enthusiastic panel disucssed at length the many advantages and opportunitites that the Aquatics Centre is going to bring to the students and people of Aberdeen and the North East, as well as elite athletes from all over the world. Student fundraisers praised by international development charity

This summer, 97 students from the University of Aberdeen will take part in various challenge events around the world to help raise money for Childreach International. So far this year, the University’s Childreach International Society has raised more than £68,000. Firoz Patel, CEO of Childreach International, said: “We are truly grateful and humbled by the continuous support and dedication of the University of Aberdeen's students”. For more information click here.

Students 4 Students Scheme launched

A new student-led mentoring scheme has started training its first cohort of mentors as the University of Aberdeen unveils its flagship Students 4 Students (S4S) Scheme. S4S aims to offer an extra level of support for new undergraduates, in order to help them settle in and find their feet as they begin their studies at the University of Aberdeen. Commenting on the S4S Scheme, Professor Sir Ian Diamond, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University said: “The S4S Scheme showcases how our staff and students can work collaboratively to make their University experience an exceptional one”. The Burn

‘The Burn’ is a country house and estate at the foot of Glenesk which has been used as an educational retreat by reading parties from The University of Aberdeen since 1950. Many of you will have fond memories of visiting ‘The Burn’ as a student, however, you may not be aware that the same facilities can also be used for private functions, reunions and holidays. Postgraduate Scholarships

As a result of additional funding from the Scottish Government, we are delighted to announce a range of scholarships now available for postgraduate study.The scholarships, totalling more than half a million pounds for all, will cover the tuition fee costs of the specific degrees. In addition to this a number of scholarships of up to £5,000 are also available to cover living costs.
