Big names signed up for Europe’s largest science festival coming to Aberdeen

The British Science Festival is Europe’s largest science festival and it’s coming to Aberdeen from 4th – 9th September 2012. The festival will be hosted by the University of Aberdeen, working alongside TechFest-SetPoint, who coordinate Aberdeen’s annual TechFest festival.

As well as spotlighting the host region to an international audience, the festival brings a substantial media presence complementing an exciting suite of specialist, public and schools programmes. We expect tens of thousands of audience interactions with hundred of events over the festival period and an even greater worldwide audience through extensive media, press and online coverage. Already signed up to take part in this showcase of UK science, which is being jointly supported by BP and Shell U.K. Limited, is author Bill Bryson, renowned for his bestselling science book A Short History of Nearly Everything and for winning the 2005 EU Descartes Prize for science communication. Super-sceptic Richard Wiseman will also be joining the fray, debunking paranormal phenomena and taking a humorous sideswipe at the ‘unexplained’. Save the date in your diary now. It’s not one to miss!

Community Events Support Medical Research at the University of Aberdeen

Alumni and friends of the University of Aberdeen have always responded generously to appeals to support a wide range of projects aimed at improving the student experience. Recently, members of the community have joined you by raising a fantastic amount of money to support medical research at the University.

The University’s medical research increases our ability to combat life-threatening diseases and illnesses such as cancer and the UK’s biggest killer, heart disease. Last year, the Moonlight Prowl charity walk raised an incredible £65,000 to support breast cancer research while Aberdeen Zonta International Club raised more than £6,300 for the Aberdeen Cardiovascular Research Centre.

Patricia Ross, President of the Aberdeen Zonta International Club explained her motivation, “We all know someone affected by heart disease and Scotland has some of the highest rates in the UK so it seemed very appropriate.”

Wherever you are in the world you could be fundraising to save a life! If you are interested in fundraising as an individual or as a group to support medical research or any other University project, please contact the University of Aberdeen Development Trust by email at aff@abdn.ac.uk or call +44 (0)1224 273 595.
