The events will bring 16 experts in their respective fields face to face with the public to discuss latest developments and topical issues in science, medicine and technology.

Topics in the city include the social networking of animals, a look at the science of the Titanic’s sinking, and a discussion on a new green alternative to cremation! Topics at Cafe MED include stress, new STEM cell work in arthritis and the increasing role of telemedicine. Cafe MED kicks off at 6pm on Mon 16 January with an event entitled Signed off with Stress. Cafe Scientifique City takes place at 7pm on Wed 18 January with a lively discussion around Did animals invent Twitter?. The Library and Archive Collections of the University of Aberdeen, a sumptuous new book celebrating the treasures held by the University of Aberdeen will be launched on 14 December. This is a rich verbal and photographic description of one of the oldest (and still-evolving) academic library collections of the English-speaking world, a microcosm of the world of knowledge as it has changed over the centuries, and a study of a particularly rich inheritance of material connected with Scotland and the North.

Beginning with the ancient books and manuscripts given at the foundation of King’s College in 1495, editors Peter Davidson, Jane Stevenson and Iain Beavan continue the story with the collections which accrued to Marischal College from its foundation in 1593, and bring it up to the present with the accessions which have come to the University of Aberdeen since the fusion of the two colleges in 1860.

Copies will be available to purchase from New University Library after December 14.
