FLAGSHIP LIBRARY OPENS
An iconic new building for Aberdeen opened its doors to the public for the first time on Monday 12 September.
The new University of Aberdeen library was designed to provide a 21st century learning and research environment for students, University staff, visitors and the public.
The library provides an advanced learning environment in which the latest learning technology adds value to a magnificent collection of over one million books. In addition, adaptable spaces provide flexibility for individual study, group-working, seminars and meetings.
The £57million project is the largest capital fundraising project yet undertaken by the University, receiving generous support from alumni and private donors around the world, from companies in many sectors of business and from local, national and international charitable trusts.
Professor Ian Diamond, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Aberdeen, said: “The opening of the new library marks a new era at the University, providing an unrivalled learning environment for our students and staff, and one we are delighted to share with the communities of our region.
“This is an outstanding facility of which we can all be very proud. It will serve the needs and ambitions of our University, City and region for many decades to come.”

5 MINUTES WITH.....
Art and science are often seen as separate realms but they are brought together in a creative environment for the annual Fabric of the Land exhibition, organised by the Department of Geology and Petroleum Geology.
Combining fine art and items of geological interest or significance in the same space has captured the public imagination and Professor Andrew Hurst reflects on the growing reputation of this innovative exhibition in the latest edition or our ‘Five minutes with’ series.
To hear Professor Hurst’s thoughts on this year’s popular exhibition and geology at the University of Aberdeen, watch his '5 minutes with' interview here.

UPDATE FROM THE STUDENT PRESIDENT, TESSA BIRLEY
Here at AUSA we have had a very busy and exciting summer. The new executive team officially took office on the 1st of August, and we’ve already been working hard for students! To see the list of those elected, click here.
I’m Tessa, the new Student President, and will provide you with regular updates to let you know what we are doing.
Our summer was busy preparing for Freshers’ week; Highlights of this year’s Freshers’ week include a very successful Scottish culture day with a local food feast in the Butchart Centre, the home of the Students’ Association on University Road.
The Charities Campaign kicked off with a very successful Charities Fling fundraiser at the new Union Bar at Hillhead. Last year the campaign raised over £95,000 for local charities and this year we hope to raise £100,000! It was a very enjoyable week to start off what we all hope will be a very exciting year!
We have also seen last year’s Student President, Robin Parker, take up his new role as the President of NUS Scotland and we wish him the very best of luck. He is not the only student to have had great success over the summer. We are very proud of Ross Grant, one of our students who has been voted Endsleigh Student of the Year for his work in international development and the local community.
I would be delighted to answer any questions you might have about the Students' Association, so please do not hesitate to get in touch by email: sapresident@abdn.ac.uk
Thanks
Tessa
