A Word Filled Weekend
From 13 - 15 May the University of Aberdeen Writers Festival, Word, will take place at King’s College campus as the festival moves into its second decade of celebrating the written and spoken word.
This year’s headliners include some of the world’s literary heavyweights – Margaret Atwood will be opening the festival and the cream of Scottish authors, including Iain Banks, Alasdair Gray, Kenneth White, James Robertson, Kevin MacNeil, Robert Alan Jamieson, and Neil Forsyth will also be participating.
This year's programme includes a 'Friday the 13th' theme and our science strand will examine some commonly held superstitions as we are joined by Michael Brooks, author of 13 Things That Don't Make Sense and experimental psychologist Bruce Hood to ask science’s most intriguing questions – and what makes us so interested in them.
In addition to the main programme a number of free and exciting events are being organised for alumni and their families to enjoy.
10.00am – 10.15am Statutory meeting of General Council
10.30am – 11.30am Family event with best selling author Glenn Murphy

The construction of our new Library and Special Collections Centre continues apace with two major milestones being reached in the last few weeks. Firstly, the building now enjoys its own power source, and so the iconic view given in the artists' impression of the building glowing over the King’s College campus at dusk has now become a reality. Also, the main crane on site, so long a part of the skyline, was removed just last week - a telling sign of the progress being made towards the opening of the building.
As we enter the last few months of the construction phase, we would like to appeal to our graduates and friends to consider donating to the Library project. We have been delighted to receive over 7,500 donations from more than 3,000 people and this project simply would not have been possible without their help.
There are numerous ways in which you can donate either as an individual, as part of a group or on behalf of a company. Information on the various ways to give and the applicable tax benefits can be found on our website at: http://www.abdn.ac.uk/giving/aberdeen/how-to-give/
Our Development team is always happy to help, to answer any questions and discuss any specific requirements. You can visit our office at the Administration Building on Regent Walk or we can be contacted by telephone or email. Please contact +44 (0)1224 273057 or at s.fernie@abdn.ac.uk
Our Sixth Century Campaign has already achieved so much. We are now entering the final few months one of the most successful and fundraising campaigns in the UK and completing the most ambitious building in the University’s modern history. We hope that you will consider supporting us.
Aberdeen Aquatics Centre
The Aberdeen Aquatics Centre also continues to make great progress following the magnificent £28 million Aberdeen Sports Village (ASV) joint venture which opened in 2009.
Scheduled to open in early 2014, this inspirational new swimming facility will include a 50m pool, an accompanying 25m pool with diving boards and seating for 600 spectators - allowing a range of water-based community activities as well as national and international level events. The project board are currently reviewing a number of tenders received for a 10-lane pool design and will be in a position to announce next steps in late July 2011.
The project partners - University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen City Council and sportscotland - have commited £20 million to the project and we have been delighted to receive additonal support which takes us closer to making this project a reality.

King’s College to Host Historic Shinty Cup Final
The long association between the University and the sport of shinty will be marked this summer with the hosting of the final of the 2011 Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup on the 30th of July.
This will be the first time that the Final has been held outside the Highlands and the opportunity to bring it to Aberdeen coincides with an important year in Aberdeen University Camanachd’s history. AU Camanachd is the oldest constituted Club in shinty and this year will be celebrating its 150th anniversary. To celebrate this the Club will be holding an evening reception after the Cup Final in the Beach Ballroom in Aberdeen and will be taking part in the Tartan Day parade down Aberdeen’s Union Street.
As part of their celebrations, the Club is looking to bring together past players at the club and is looking to trace members of their Cup Final teams of the 1970s, 1990s and 2000s. If you would like to be involved, please get in contact with Terry Stebbings or Steven MacKenzie.

Aberdeen Alumnus Association
On 16 February 2011, the Association heard a talk by Jenny Shirreffs, one of our own members, on the subject “Have Medical Class – Will Travel”, with support from husband Murdoch operating the computer. An attendance of 41 heard an illustrated and most interesting account of the various ways in which the medical class of 1964-70 and their spouses have regularly gathered together over the years and undertaken visits to many parts of the world. Afterwards we enjoyed a glass of wine and some nibbles.
Forthcoming events include; on 1 May, a visit to the Cowdray Hall to hear performances by the finalists in the Ogston Music Prize; and on 18 May, a visit to Mackie’s of Scotland, hosted by Maitland Mackie. The Association continues to be keen to welcome to its events visitors who may wish to consider membership but who would like to attend one or two events before making a commitment.
