Community Cafe Science – EXCITING NEW PROGRAMMES LAUNCHED
The 2011 programmes
for our Cafe Science series are out now. We are returning with Cafe
Scientifique City, Cafe Scientifique Shire and Cafe MED held
respectively at Waterstone’s Union Bridge, Woodend Barn Banchory and the
Suttie Centre Foresterhill. The new series run through the first half
of next year and feature 25 social and natural scientists, engineers,
clinicians and medical consultants, all experts in their fields. We
believe this series is now second to none in the UK for bringing
together top academic researchers with the public on a regular monthly
basis. Audiences continue to grow and we anticipate over 3,500 people to
attend over the course of 2011.
However, Cafe Science
fans will not have to wait until 2011 to experience our programmes,
because our two latest additions to the cafe suite are running
currently, through till December of this year. Cafe Controversial and
Cafe Light continue in November with sessions at Satrosphere and The
Museum of Scottish Lighthouses in Fraserburgh.
On 15 November,
Professor Bill Naphy from the University’s Department of History will
lead a lively Cafe Controversial session on ‘Flat Earths, Moving Suns
and Creationism’, suggesting that satirical mischief-making has
influenced historical reporting in this arena, where faith can meet
scientific evidence head on. The session begins at 6pm in Satrosphere
Science Centre’s Tramsheds coffee house. Drinks and snacks can be
purchased throughout.
Also on 15 November,
at The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses Cafe, our Cafe Light series
continues with a talk on Vitamin D and its importance for health and
wellbeing. The session, entitled ‘Do Fishermen have the Healthiest
Bones’, begins at 12.30pm and is presented by Dr Helen Macdonald and Dr
Antonia Hardcastle from the University of Aberdeen Institute of Medical
Sciences.

The Scottish Parliament Welcomes Rebels With a Cause
27 October 2010 -08 January 2011
Venue: The Scottish Parliament Building, Edinburgh
The
Scottish Parliament is showcasing a major new exhibition titled Rebels
with a Cause: The Jacobites and the Global Imagination. The fascinating
exhibition explores and challenges traditional assumptions about the
Jacobites and highlights the worldwide aspects of the Jacobite story.
It reveals how after their defeat, some fled to the exiled courts of
Paris and Rome, while many others drew upon a network of kin and
patronage to seek new opportunities in Baltic Europe, North America and
India.
This free exhibition has been curated in partnership between the
Scottish Parliament and the University of Aberdeen and draws upon rarely
seen and internationally significant material from the University’s
collection.
Included are rare engravings, portraits and letters, a Jacobite
recruitment slip and songbook, a letter written by Bonnie Prince Charlie
while in exile, a first edition of Sir Walter Scott’s novel Waverley
and a selection of 20th century Rob Roy comics. One of the rarest
artefacts is an ostrich egg carved with secret Jacobite symbols made in
memory of the death of James VIII and III. For more information click
here.

An Aberdeen alumnus has been selected as a finalist in the prestigious photographic competition of the BBC’s Countryfile programme for 2010. Jennifer Duncan, 31, a former student of the School of Biological Sciences, beat off competition from more than 65,000 other amateur photographers to secure a place in the final 12 of the contest. Jennifer, who is originally from Newburgh and graduated with a BSc in Zoology in 2001, said her interest in photography has been strongly influenced by the beautiful surroundings of the Ythan Estuary. Her image of a line of puffins watching another puffin jump in the air was taken in July on the Farne Islands, just off the Northumberland Coast.
